this animation is based on a map the New State of the World graphic atlas which shows the number of refugees received by each country (the data is from the early 1990's) in the world. the data and graphics for this map were taken from the Atlas and animated in processing.

refugee entry is abstracted as an imaginary weight falling on a country. each entry causes a momentary lowering of the country, after which the country rises to a higher level. this motion eventually leads to a three-dimensional bar graph, with refugee population on the vertical axis. the higher the vertical displacement of a country (and the darker the country), the more refugees that are harbored within the country.
