this animation is based on a map the New State of the World graphic atlas which shows the number of refugees produced by each country (the data is from the early 1990's) in the world. the data and graphics for this map were taken from the Atlas and animated in processing.

the refugee population of each country is represented by the total number of tiles in the abstracted country border. the darker a country's tiles are, the greater the number of refugees in the country that have fled the country.
